Program Components

Test Preparation: One of the most stressful aspects of applying to American colleges and universities for international students is passing the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or scoring well in the SAT (Standardized Aptitude Test). The ACIC is designed to relieve that stress by providing effective classes that will make you familiar with the TOEFL or SAT, provide effective tips to improve your test performance, and increase your score through practice tests and questions.

Debate and Preparedness: The ACIC incorporates an innovative, globally recognized debate program designed by America's greatest speaking and argumentation minds. Debate has been recognized as an outstanding means to sharpen the critical thinking and reasoning skills that American colleges and univeristies are looking for. Yale professor Dr. Minh A. Luong notes that "participation in...debate has significantly increased the success rate of college applicates at all schools." Our debate seminars will provide international students with the same advantage while bolstering English language skills in order to be prepared for the speaking portion of the TOEFL.

College Admissions Secrets and Research: Learn how college applications are evaluated in different admissions offices, and learn strategies to make each application the best it can possibly be. Candidates will learn about the differences between many types of American colleges and universities, as well as the unique opportunities available at each type of institution. Counselors will work closely with students to expand their list of potential colleges and refine it, so that they leave the program with a list of prospective colleges.

Essay Help: Writing an exceptional essay is one of the most important and difficult components of applying to American colleges and universities. Over the course of ACIC, you will meet with trained writing tutors who will help participants write a stand out college admissions essay. Participants can bring a draft of their international college essay to the program and have it critiqued, or they can brainstorm an essay with a tutor.

Small Group Counseling: Every day of the instructional sessions, students will break into small groups with others to discuss the information provided in that day's seminar. Participants will work with our trained staff to discuss how they can best apply the ideas and information that they have learned in the day's seminar to their own international college applications.

Visit the Greatest Schools in the Country: In addition to providing a rigorous academic experience while at Emory University, the second portion of the ACIC will take students on tours of exciting U.S. cities and the best elite and Ivy League universities in the nation. In addition to a special tour of Emory, students will have the opportunity to take part in candid and informative tours of MIT, Harvard University, Dartmouth College, Yale University, Princeton University, Columbia University, and NYU.

Visit the Greatest Sights in the Country: While the ACIC has a demanding curriculum, students will also have the ability to experience America’s landmark destinations. With supervised trips to renowned cities such as Boston and New York, participants will be visit culturally rich and historical points of interest such as Broadway, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Statue of Liberty. Students will even get behind the scenes tours of the United Nations and television’s NBC Studios!
